Chemical Machining & Etching Services

Alloy 42 Chemical Etching

Tecomet Inc. provides alloy 42 chemical etching for a variety of industries. We specialize in thin, high-precision alloy 42 foils, and machine components to meet the the most demanding requirements, with excellent feature and tolerance control. We can successfully etch production alloy 42 components that are 0.0005 inches thick, or 10% of the thickness of a human hair. We can also etch alloy 42 as thick as 0.040 inches.

Capabilities

Tecomet Inc.’s state-of-the-art chemical etching process is cost-effective and repeatable, producing even the most intricate parts reliably and to the tightest tolerances. We are experienced in working with alloy 42 and machine components to accommodate the unique properties of the alloy to ensure high performance for the finished part. Our etching process can be used to create exacting half-etch and partial-etch areas that can be used to create features with varying thicknesses, mark the surface of a component with a logo or part number and facilitate bending during fabrication and assembly. Etching allows components to be machined with affecting the remaining material or surface finish, resulting in a clean cut with no heat-affected areas or burrs. Chemical machining is also used to micro-etch the surface of completed components to improve bonding in later processes.

Applications

Alloy 42 is a nickel-steel alloy with a low coefficient of thermal expansion that matches the coefficient for silicon. Due to this property, the metal does not expand, making it a good material for joining ceramic chips to electronic circuits and to use in glass-to-metal seals in cathode tubes and other products. In addition to glass-to-metal seals and electronic components, etched alloy 42 is used for electronic leadframes and thermostatic bi-metal strips. It is used in the electronics, medical device, and automotive industries. Alloy 42 is an inexpensive alternative to Kovar.  Tecomet's alloy 42 components are DFARS and ITAR compliant for use in defense applications and are manufactured to ISO 9001:2015 standards.
